If not, only if not: 아니면, 만 아니면

아니면 combines 아니다 (to not be) with 면 (if) to form ‘if not’.

I will come back soon. But if not, I will call you immediately.

If not now, then when?

Next year, I’ll go to Seoul University or (if not) Busan University to study.

만 아니면 creates a structure similar to ‘if only it were not’:

If it weren’t for my girlfriend I’d have a lot of money.

If it weren’t for the bad weather, I’d have slept well last night.
