Thoughts on… How Best to Learn Korean

Some points from a conversation with a Korean friend about learning. I found it particularly interesting as he teaches English at a university. Any thoughts? Please leave a comment!

  1. Students of Korean should just learn one of the many politeness levels in the short term and hope everyone else will forgive your uncouthness.
  2. Also, it may be worth choosing a primary medium (writing or speaking) and then cross the bridges as you come to them, e.g. 근데 vs 그렇지만, 항상 vs 맨날 etc.
  3. Formal courses need not consist purely of what a Korean scholar finds interesting.
  4. Repetition is (still) an undervalued and misused skill.
