Diary 15: Story Time – 뺑소니 자동차

Following on from a previous post on dramatising Korean to improve your accent, here is a (bad) joke from 유머 영어 (Humor English), my first ever parallel text.

My good friend 서희 read it aloud and let me record and imitate her half-Seoul-half-Busan accent (!), which really helped me get a better feel for connections in speech, intonation and phrasing.

Even though I didn’t memorise it, I will blow my own trumpet now and say that in terms of pronunciation it is definitely an advance on my previous efforts!

The hit and run victim was just getting to his feet when a police man ran up to help.

“My mother-in-law just tried to run me over!” The shaken man told the cop.

“The car hit you from behind, the officer said. “How could you tell it was your mother-in-law?”

“I recognised her laugh!”
