Other than, except

These three structures use different verbs — 말다 (to not do), 빼다 (to omit, subtract) and 제외하다 (to exclude) — to show that there is an exception to a given pattern or order:

금요일을 말고(는) Al-Fateh 그렌드 모스크를 매일 대중에게 공개되고 있어요.

The Al-Fateh Grand Mosque is open to the public every day except Friday.

컴퓨터 게임을 하는 것 말고(는) 한국 고등 학생들은 취미가 많이 없는 것 같아요.

Apart from playing computer games Korean high school students don’t seem to have many hobbies.

우리 고등학교에서는 추석을 말고(는) 학생들 자습실을 이용할 수 있어요.

At my high school, you can use the self study room every day except Chuseok.

영화를 보는 것 말고 할 일이 아무것도 없어요.

There’s nothing to do here except watch movies.

걸어다니는 것 말고 모든 운동을 못 해요.

Apart from walking around he doesn’t do any exercise.

을/를 제외하고(는) (used in writing)

생선을 제외하고(는) 고기를 별로 먹지 않아요.

With the exception of fish I don’t eat much meat.

한국에 몇몇 사람들이 군역에서 제외돼요.

Only a few people are exempt from military service in Korea.

백화점들을 걸어다니거나 할머니집에 가는 것을 제외하고는, 주말에 바레인 사람들은 아무것도 안 해요.

People in Bahrain don’t do anything on weekends except wander around department stores or go to their grandmother’s house.

을/를 빼고(는)

바레인의 무더운 여름 동안에는 쇼핑몰을 빼고(는) 시원하게 해주는 곳이 많이 없어요.

There aren’t many places to cool off during Bahrain’s sweltering summer apart from shopping malls.

26번을 빼고(는) 여기에서 모든 버스를 들려요.

All the buses stop here except the number 26.

비행기를 타는 것을 빼고(는) 저는 아무것도 두려워하지 않아요.

I’m not afraid of anything apart from flying.
