Word Wars: 차이 vs 다르다 (to be different)

차이 comes from the Hanja ‘差異’: means to differ and and means to be strange or alien.

A와 B는 무슨 차이가 있나요?
What’s the difference between A and B?

서울과 뉴욕은 시차가 얼마나 되지요?
What’s the time difference between Seoul and New York?

리야드와 런던은 2시간의 시차가 나요.
There’s a two hour time difference between Riyadh and London.

[성]차별을 받아본 적이 있어요?
Have you ever been discriminated against [because of your gender]?

세상에 빈부의 차이가 증가하고 있어요.
The difference between rich and poor is increasing around the world.

다르다 is the pure Korean adjective ‘to be different‘:

A와 B는 너무 달라요.
A and B are very different.

사우디아라비아와 달리 한국은 사계절이 뚜렷해요.
Unlike Saudi Arabia, Korea has four distinct seasons.

대부분 영어 선생님이 몇 년마다 다른 학교으로 이사해요.
Most English teachers move to another/a different school every few years.

다름이 아니라 관광하러 파리에 가 봤어요.
I went to Paris for no other reason than sightseeing.

제가 만든 죽 맛은 대형마트에서 산 죽 맛이나 다름 없어요.
My homemade soup tastes no different from the soup bought from the supermarket.
