Uncertainty and Confirmation (I don't know if/whether...)

A/V/N + ㄴ/은/인/는지 is used to show or seek confirmation as to whether fact is known. It can be preceded by a question word (누구, 언제, 어떻게, 왜…) and is often followed with 알다/모르다:

경민이 운전 면허 시험에 합격했는지 알아요?

Do you know if Gyeongmin passed his driving test (because I still haven’t heard)?

폭우가 쏟아지고 있니까 집에서 나가기 전에 버스가 다니는지 확인하세요.

There’s heavy rain so before you leave the house please check whether the bus is running.

언제 다음 학기 개강하는지 물어봐야 해요.

We should ask when next term’s classes begin (because we don’t know).

마이크가 왜 파티에 안 왔는지 모르겠어요.

I don’t know why Mike didn’t come to the party.

왠지 모르겠는데…

I’m not sure why…

미안합니다만 오늘은 뭐가 뭔지 잘 모르겠어요.

I’m sorry, but today I’m really not with it (literally: I’m not sure what is what).

지하철로 원당에서 서울역까지 얼마나 걸리는지 알아요?

Do you know how long it takes to get from Wondang to Seoul Station by subway?

아내가 저에게 어떻게 치즈케이크를 만드는지 가르쳐 주래요.

My wife asked me to teach her how to make cheesecake (because she didn’t know).

그 남자가 누구인지 알아요?

Do you know who that man is?

서울대공원에 어떻게 가는지 알아요?

Do you know how to get to Seoul Grand Park (because I’m not sure)?

경록은 여자친구가 있는지 없는지 모르겠어요.

I’m not sure whether Gyeongrok has a girlfriend or not.

고속버스 편이 더 싼지 열차 편이 더 싼지 알려주세요.

Please let me know if it’s cheaper to go by train or express bus.

그 여자는 중국인지 아닌지 모르겠어요.

I’m not sure if that woman is Chinese or not.

가끔 제 고등학생들이 책상에서 공부하는지 잠을 자는지 모르겠어요.

Sometimes I don’t know if my high school students are studying at their desks or sleeping.
